Swetha Basu Prasad Became a Director - Roots Documentary Indian Classical Music




Swetha Basu Prasad, the National Award winning actress for Iqbal and Makdee is all set to become a documentary director. The title of the documentary is called Roots that focuses on the traditional value of the Indian classical music and its propagation among the modern day Indian youth. Speaking about the documentary, she said that she is from a family of musicians and music lovers. Swetha Basu Prasad herself is a sitar player and it is natural that her interests lie in the field of Indian classical music.

The documentary features eminent musicians and their thoughts that give the viewers lot of information about the value of our cultural and classical Indian music. It features artists like AR Rahman, Dr L Subramanyam, Gulzar, Shuba Mudgal, Pandit Jasraj, Vishal Bharadwaj and others. Swetha Basu explains that she had been working hard on this project for the past 3 years and it is this cause that forced her not to sign even a single film as an actress. The documentary film currently in its post-production works will be soon released to the audience who mostly belong to younger generations. According to Swetha Basu Prasad, it will be mostly screened in schools and colleges.

The shooting of the roots documentary started on 11th May 2011 in Ryan Global School, Andheri, Mumbai. According to Swetha Basu, the first day shoot was nervous and shabby but she was confident enough that all well also ends well.

All through the shooting she had great experiences, amazing interviews and a great footage. She recollects that all these memories would be remembered for her whole life time. Her documentary team includes some of the best crews including creative director and cinematographer, Adhiraj Bose. Swetha along with her crew had worked hard on the subject for the past 3 years highlight the importance of our cultural values and classical music gifted to us through 5000year old tradition. She feels the responsibility to bring awareness and encourage the current generation to pass on this age old tradition to the future generations.

This documentary features many eminent musicians, living legends, vocalists, singers, lyricists, music instrument makers, music academies, past and present lives of the people that depend on the traditional Indian Classical Music.

 Swetha Basu Prasad in her quest to find true form of classical Indian music and arts, featured Sangit Mahabharati of Juhu, Mumbai. This institution stands for its serious research and education on classical Indian music forms established by the internationally renowned Tabla maestro and Guru, Padmabhushan Pandit Nikhil Ghosh in 1956. Sangit Mahabharati offers certification courses in Hindustani classical music arts and dance forms. Apart from great courses from great teachers, various seminars, awareness programs, research projects on musicology are conducted in the institution.

Swetha Basu Prasad in her research for the documentary also met A.R. Rahman who is an Indian composer, singer-songwriter, music producer, musician and philanthropist. His skilled in Carnatic music, Western and Hindustani classical music and dedication towards the music and musical world is noteworthy. In his two decade career he is acclaimed for redefining contemporary Indian film music and contributing his efforts for music industry. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory is music research institution that offers various courses in Hindustani and Western classical music and music technology.

Documentary required great research that led Swetha Basu Prasad to approach nook and corner of this great nation to find true of essence of classical Indian music. In her effort she also interviewed Kiran Seth an Indian Academician despite his technological background in Mechanical Engineering founded a non-profit organization that promotes Indian classical music and art forms through its 500 chapters around the world through various fests, lectures, baithaks and musical conventions. His efforts were recognized by Government of India by awarding Padma Shri for his contribution to the world of fine arts.

Swetha Basu’s research also includes some other eminent personalities such as Dr. L.Subramaniam, Gulzar saab, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shubha Mudgal and others.

Swetha Basu Prasad is an Indian actress born in the year 1991. The actress is currently working mostly in the south Indian films. Initially her family was living in Jamshedpur of Jharkhand, later they moved to Mumbai. Swetha’s parents were from two different states i.e. her father Anuj was from Bihar whereas her mother Sarmishta Basu was from West Bengal. Swetha Basu Prasad adopted her maiden name ‘basu’ from her mother. She entered the film industry through her debut film Makdee in the year 2002 which helped her in getting various small screen offers such as Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Karishma Kaa Karishma.

Swetha Basu studied Commerce in R.N. Podar High School of Mumbai. Along with education she was also pursued her film career in parallel. Her career as an artist started at age of eleven years with the film Makdee where she played a twin role as Chunni and Munni. Swetha Basu secured Best Child Artist Award for her character in Indian National Film festival and Star Screen Award festival in the category of Best Child Artist. This children’s film also won second prize at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival.

Nagesh Kukunoor’s Iqbal was Swetha’s second film which was screened in the year 2005. This film proved her acting skills paving way for many upcoming offers. Her supporting character in the film was appreciated by audience as well as renowned critics. Swetha Basu Prasad as Khadija, Iqbal’s sister won her Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress and Zee Cine Award – Critics' Choice for Best Actress category. She was a nominee in Filmfare Award festival for Best Supporting Actress, and was also the nominee in IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress. Swetha’s character in the film was well received even in other film festivals such as 5th Karachi International Film Festival for her acting which presented her Best Supporting Actress Award. Nagesh Kukunoor, the director of the film also won National Film Award in the category Best Film on Other Social Issues. Naseeruddin Shah, the co-actor in the film won National Film Award for the category Best Supporting Actor. According to BBC, the film was ‘Rich in Character and Charm and also much-needed shot in the arm for Indian cinema’.

Swetha’s next film was Darna Zaroori Hai(2006), a Bollywood Anthology film interweaving six different stories into one film with six different directors each directing a story. She played character as Ashu in the film.

Swetha Basu’s entry into Tollywood or the Telugu film Industry was the biggest turning point in her career. It was in the year 2008 that got her new heights with the film Kotha Bangaru Lokam (English: A New Golden World). She played lead role as heroine with her co-star Varun Sandesh. The film was release amidst Vijayadashami festival, became one of the biggest blockbusters of the year in Telugu cinema industry. It finished 100 days screening milestone in various theatres of Andhra Pradesh. Swetha played a role of an innocent young student who falls in love with her classmate. The teenage love story was well received by the audience, especially among the youth. According to Idlebrain.com, ‘Swetha Prasad and Varun Sandesh were a delight to watch and made a good pair’. The film won many awards and accolades such as Filmfare Awards South and Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Awards in various categories. Kalavar King, Alasyam Amrutham were some of her other films.    

Swetha Basu Prasad after a gap of couple of years is now trying her luck as a producer of a documentary that deals in traditional Hindustani classical music. This project named Roots is new of its kind that focuses on the greatness of our Indian classical music. Her interest in the subject can be found through her roots as a trained musician and music related affinity of her ancestors. The target audience is youth who are continuously moving away from Indian traditional values and music. This film is said to be screened in schools and colleges to bring awareness among the next generation. The actress is currently busy in the project since 3 years which forced her not to sign even a single new film.
